Netflow

Netflow is a network protocol developed by Cisco Systems to collect network traffic information. It can be used to monitor traffic state, control traffic flow, detect security problems and gather statistics (for example, to bill consumers for traffic used).

The whole traffic analysis is done in this way: there are Netflow exporters, sending traffic-related data to Netflow collectors, for possible storage and processing. All the other use of traffic data uses the stats gathered by the collector. Note that partial software solution exists, such as ipcad, offering capability to gather and monitor traffic usage on devices not supporting Netflow.
