Network Camera Server

As in case of print servers, network camera servers can be either a network device providing high efficiency video data encoding and interface to video source devices (cameras), or a computer connected to one or more cameras, providing access to the recorded data and live signal. In the latter case a number of software pieces is used to monitor and recognize certain types of objects, control camera position and state, keep video archives and provide interface to track objects.

When a specialized network device is meant, the functions of a network camera server can vary. The common function is to perform remotely controlled surveillance and monitoring of visible activity. As in case of any network device, an interface is usually provided to check the device state, receive data and control device behavior – over SNMP or other types of protocol.
