SNMP switch

A switch supporting SNMP is called a SNMP switch. In most cases, SNMP can be used to get the basic data about switch state, such as traffic consumed; SNMP support in switched is often basic, most parameters can only be monitored, not changed (due to the fact switches are the rather simple devices without much control over their operation.

In case SNMP switch can send SNMP traps, it’smuch more useful in terms of monitoring network state, since traps can be used to indicate a certain traffic condition, device state change and so on. If SNMP v3 is supported, it is the preferred means to communicate with the device, since other access means are often insecure (Telnet, HTTP etc).
