Simple Network Management protocol, or SNMP provides means to access and modify certain parameters of network devices. Traditionally, this is done by a SNMP client (piece of software or hardware with embedded SNMP manager) sending requests and receiving reponses. However, this polling technique can be either resource-consuming or inefficient in case a special actions should be taken immediately upon certain state of a given device occurs.
Tohandle this, SNMP traps have been developed. Trap is set by instructing a special piece of software to intercept a given element change and send this event to a given command (program or script). This allows to facilitate monitoring device without overburdening them with polling, as well as invoking appropriate actions in case of certain events (say, switch to another ISP when a default gateway indicates the line is broken).
