Much More Than A Simple PING Tool

PING Your Servers Regularly

IPHost Network Monitor provides a simple, yet powerful PING Tool, primary use of which is to check basic connectivity.

PING, or “Echo” requests/responses of ICMP (Internet Message Control Protocol) is somewhat underestimated; although the basic use of PING is measurement of round-trip time (RTT, time required to send request and receive its immediate response), it can be used to detect network problems in general.

Under normal circumstance, average PING response time is always within certain limits. If response time starts getting too big, it’s a signal that network might be under a high load, or particular device can become irresponsible, for variety of reasons. Studying trends in average PING response time can help detecting possible problem patterns, indicating that device, or certain software part thereof requires tuning, or further studying. to prevent possible problems.

Sudden, drastic changes in PING response times for many device on network may indicate a general, network-wide problem (such as malfunctioning network adapter on one of devices, network saturation events, miscellaneous types of attacks and so on.

PING and RTT (round-trip-time)

Round-trip time is defined as time interval required to send signal and get response (immediately sent by remote host). If network isn’t overloaded, routing is set up correctly and there are no other problems in transit, then RTT is close to time required an electromagnetic wave to cross corresponding distance (simplifying, that would mean ICMP packets travel with speed of light).

Summing up: the shorter RTT, the better. Peaks in RTT signify certain problems en route to target host. Using tool such as traceroute (which performs RTT measurement for every host packets traverse to reach the remote host), problem hosts (routers etc) can be detected, as well as general connectivity problems between separate networks.

PING as Dependence

Since PING indicates general connectivity, it’s only natural to use its absence as indicator that device is irresponsible (requiring further analysis, for what is the reason of connectivity problems).

Say, when device goes offline, and its other monitors are dependent on PING monitor, there will be no numerous alerts from every such monitor: there will be PING alerts only; there monitors would stop without sending spurious alerts about going down. Similarly, as soon as PING returns into normal state again, that can be used to re-awake other monitors, resuming monitoring without excessive alerts.
