Routers

Compared with hubs and network switches, routers are most intelligent and complicated devices. able to send traffic to a known destination and perform a number of other control functions (work as a firewall, perform port forwarding, create DMZ, provide SNMP and other types of interfaces to inquire and change the device’s behavior and so on.

Simply speaking, routers can interconnect intranets and ISPs; powerful routers can interconnect a number of ISPs with a number of intranets. In complex networks traffic is usually redirected via subsequent routers to the destination networking device. Thus router activity monitoring becomes an important part of network maintenance and optimization. There can be numerous types of routers (by their function – core routers, edge routers and so on).
