Modem SNMP monitor

Monitoring modem devices

IPHost Network Monitor allows you to test and monitor performance parameters of network modems. You can select what variable to monitor using built-in MIB browser that provides you with all variables supported by modem, their current values and descriptions taken from MIBs.

Modem (from modulator-demodulator) is a hardware device that modulates carrier wave signal to transmit information (on the receiving end another modem demodulates the signal). Most common type of modems use phone lines to transmit digital information. Earlier modem were limited by telephone’s voiceband audio frequencies, thus allowing digital information transmitting at very low speed.

Currently, wide assortment of broadband, cable and power line modems exists, approaching speed possible over standard twisted pair cables, and other media, including optics, radio and mobile telephone systems.

Primary modems use is providing Internet access; depending on media type, transmission speed can vary greatly. Since different media can be available at the same time, modems of different types can be used to provide backup Internet connectivity, in case primary Internet channel gets unavailable.

Mobile broadband modems allow using stable Internet access outdoor (provided the mobile telephony is covering the area in questions well).

Many modem devices are hybrid network devices, providing functions of network switches and/or routers; thus, ADSL modems using high quality (low noise) phone line, can act as bridges, uniting physically distant area into a single network.

Depending on modem device type, other functions can be incorporated (those of firewall, router, WiFi access point, DHCP and other services), making it all-in-one device suitable for small networks. Power line modems can be used to control in-home devices (i.e., access to “smart home” or IoT functions).

Typical modems monitoring use cases

Modems provide connectivity; monitoring modems, apart from gathering common health state parameters, can be used to

  • check quality of service for certain modem connections (for example, to switch to another connection if current one degrades)
  • perform traffic accounting (group traffic by users and protocols)
  • detect possible unwanted traffic or other security-related traffic patterns

List of MIBs used to monitor modem devices

A collection of MIBs used to monitor modem devices follows:

  • ADSL-DMT-LINE-MIB

Descriptions of managed objects for ADSL DMT line interfaces

  • CISCO-ADSL-CAP-LINE-MIB

This MIB module serves as an enterprise-specific extension of the ADSL-LINE-MIB. The structure of this MIB module shadows the structure of the ADSL-LINE-MIB, table for table.

  • CISCO-ADSL-DMT-LINE-MIB

This MIB module serves as an enterprise-specific extension of the ADSL-LINE-MIB. The structure of this MIB module shadows the structure of the ADSL-LINE-MIB, table for table.

  • CISCO-CALL-TRACKER-MODEM-MIB

This MIB module provides modem call related data for tracking the progress and status of a call. This module extends tables defined in the MIB module ciscoCallTrackerMIB in CISCO-CALL-TRACKER-MIB

  • CISCO-IDSL-LINE-MIB

This MIB module describes IDSL (ISDN Digital Line Subscriber) line interfaces. The structure of this module resembles that of the ADSL-LINE-MIB (RFC-2662). Observe that the tables in this module do not necessarily extend the tables defined by the ADS…

  • CISCO-IETF-VDSL-LINE-MIB

The MIB module defining objects for the management of a pair of VDSL modems at each end of the VDSL line. Each VDSL line has an entry in an ifTable.

  • CISCO-MODEM-MGMT-MIB

This MIB module contains information regarding modem management.

  • CISCO-SDSL-LINE-MIB

This MIB module describes all variations of the symmetric DSL line interfaces. The structure of this module resembles and maintains consistency with the ADSL-LINE-MIB, ADSL-DMT-LINE-MIB, CISCO-ADSL-DMT-LINE-MIB, and CISCO-ADSL-CAP-LINE-MIB.

  • CISCO-XDSL-LINE-MIB

The tables defined by this MIB module contain a collection of managed objects that are general in nature and apply to different types of modems. The structure of this module resembles the ADSL-LINE-MIB, CISCO-SDSL-LINE-MIB, ADSL-DMT-LINE-MIB, CISCO-AD…

  • DOCS-BPI2-MIB

MIB Module for the DOCSIS Baseline Privacy Plus Interface (BPI+) at cable modems (CMs) and cable modem termination systems (CMTSs).

  • DOCS-BPI-MIB

MIB Module for the DOCSIS Baseline Privacy Interface (BPI) at cable modems (CMs) and cable modem termination systems (CMTSs). CableLabs requires the implementation of this MIB in DOCSIS 1.0 cable modems that implement the Baseline Privacy Interface, as…

  • DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-MIB

MIB Module for MCNS-compliant cable modems and cable-modem termination systems.

  • DOCS-CABLE-DEVICE-TRAP-MIB

The CABLE DEVICE TRAP MIB is an extension of the CABLE DEVICE MIB defined in RFC2669. It defines various trap objects for both cable modem and cable modem termination system.

  • DOCS-IF-EXT-MIB
    Extension module to rfc2670 DOCS-IF-MIB
  • DOCS-IF-MIB

This is the MIB Module for DOCSIS 2.0 compliant Radio Frequency (RF) interfaces in Cable Modems (CM) and Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS).

  • MODEM-MIB
MIB module for management of dial-up modems.
